Welcome to Autumn Term in Year 5
UKS2 Autumn Project Overview Tudors Alps
We are thrilled to introduce our Autumn term project: “How do people’s lives change?” This exciting theme will guide our learning across a range of subjects as we explore changes in people’s lives throughout history and across the globe.
Our historical studies will focus on the Tudor period, spanning from 1485 to 1603, followed by the beginning of the Stuart era. We will delve into key events from the reign of Henry VIII and explore the defining features of the Elizabethan age. Using a wide range of historical sources, children will develop their enquiry skills and gain insight into life during Tudor times.
Our geographical focus will be the Alps. Children will investigate the human and physical geography of this fascinating mountain region, guided by the question: ‘What is life like in the Alps?’. They will use a variety of data collection methods to explore how the landscape and environment shape people’s lives.
In DT, children will design and construct an automated toy using CAM mechanisms to create movement. They will develop hands-on skills including measuring, sawing, cutting, and assembling components to build a fully functioning automaton.
Art lessons this term will explore how colour can be used to create depth and perspective in landscape painting. Children will study how artists use tone, shade, and composition to bring scenes to life on the page.
Our writing units will link closely with our History and Geography topics. We will begin by reading Treason by Berlie Doherty, which offers a vivid look at life in the court of Henry VIII. This text will inspire historical writing, character studies, and creative storytelling.
PE lessons will take place every Tuesday and will be led by a specialist coach. From September, children must have their PE kits in school and will get changed before and after each session. Year 5 will then be going swimming every Wednesday afternoon from September to December.
Homework plays a vital role in Year 5, in helping to consolidate learning and develop independent study habits for secondary school. Weekly homework will be set using Learning by Questions (LbQ) as well as spellings, handwriting and timetables being sent home in a book.
Reading at home is also crucial. Please listen to your child read at least three times per week and record each session in their reading diary. We will keep track of this, and every completed reading session earns a stamp on their bookmark. After collecting 30 stamps, children will receive a prize from Mrs Salmeron.
Children are also expected to complete six homework projects throughout the term. A selection of tasks can be found on the project overview, and we’re excited to see the creativity and effort children put into these.
We’re looking forward to a fantastic term filled with curiosity, creativity, and learning. Thank you for your continued support.
