Year 6 design Anderson Shelters
This week, Year 6 were challenged with building, designing and evaluating a robust Anderson Shelter to withstand the Blitz. Working in small groups, children began the day by designing their Anderson Shelter. Air-Raid Wardens insisted on several specifications that the children had to try and incorporate into their designs. They also had to adhere to a strict budget of 60 shillings to buy all their materials from the wardens.
Having discussed which materials to purchase from the shop, the children began to construct their designs.
In the afternoon we worked with Mrs Stonier to sew some intricate sandbags to protect their shelters. We learned how to measure and cut materials accurately; to fasten on and off correctly and to use a backstitch to create a tight seam so the sand won’t escape.
The following day, the wardens inspected builds and suggested a few areas for improvement. Each build had to withstand the size, weight and water test the to see if they had met the specification.
